FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA ITALIANA
CELEBRATION DINNER
Saturday 3rd June 2023

The 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳ (BIA) continued the celebrations of Italian Republic Day [Festa Della Rupubblica Italiana] with a gala dinner. Attendance was made up by the BIA committee and its members, Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King MP, community leaders, car club members from the flag raising display and the general public, leading to what was an entertaining success.

The celebration was held in the St Patricks Cathedral Hall in Ballarat Central, a hall reminiscent of many Cathedrals you would find in Italy. All those in attendance enjoyed a fully catered menu, complete with four courses. And of course, no one left hungry, mangia mangia!

Tarantella anyone?

There was plenty of dancing to keep everyone entertained, thanks to the music entertainment provided by Bella Ciao. Their music, which is inspired by the Italian Peninsula, covering the 40’s, 50”s & 60’s, with genres ranging from Tango and Polka to Waltz and Jazz and Tarantella. The playful, tragic, hopeful and loved are common themes of the classically Italian repertoire, which Bella Ciao weaves into a tapestry of music and songs.

Prizes and Giveaways galore…

The night was full of prizes and giveaways and kept everyone entertained. The BIA would like to thank all of our sponsors for their kind donation of prizes, an interactive list of sponsors is shown below.

FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA ITALIANA

Friday 2nd June 2023

On a crisp but gloriously sunny day, the 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳ (BIA) with the support of the City of Ballarat held the annual Flag Raising Ceremony, celebrating Italian Republic Day [Festa della Rupubblica Italiana].

Festa della RepubblicaÌý(±õ³Ù²¹±ô¾±²¹²Ô:Ìý[ˈfÉ›sta della reˈpubblika]; English:ÌýRepublic Day) is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2 June each year, with the main celebration taking place in Rome. TheÌýFesta della RepubblicaÌýis one of theÌýnational symbols of Italy.

The day commemorates the institutionalÌýreferendumÌýheld byÌýuniversal suffrageÌýin 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following theÌýSecond World WarÌýandÌýthe fallÌýofÌýFascism.

The ceremony of the event, organized in Rome, includes the deposition of aÌýlaurel wreathÌýas a tribute to theÌýItalian Unknown SoldierÌýat theÌýAltare della PatriaÌýby theÌýPresident of the Italian RepublicÌýand aÌýmilitary paradeÌýalongÌýVia dei Fori ImperialiÌýin Rome.

The Fiat Car Club of Victoria with Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club of Australia (Victoria Division) presented a vibrant display of Italian cars, parked out the front of Ballarat’s majestic Town Hall.

Preceding the official raising of the Italian flag, attendees were addressed by the Master of Ceremonies, Cr Samantha McIntosh, who then introduced Intercultural Italian Ambassador Antonella Cupello for an Acknowledgement of Country. Cr McIntosh also invited the City of Ballarat’s Mayor, Cr Des Hudson OAMÌýand 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳’s President, Frank CotroneaÌýto speak.

Ballarat’s own Twilight Gypsí performed live, with a lovely , enjoyed by all. This led into the official raising of the Italian flag at Ballarat’s Queen Victoria Square, opposite the Town Hall in Sturt Street.

The Ceremony then concluded with a morning tea in the Trench Room of the Town Hall.

With a large presence of the BIA committee and its members, community leaders, Black Hill Primary School students and the general public, this event was a rousing success, so we thank you all.

BUONA FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA ITALIANA [ITALIAN REPUBLIC DAY] /buona-festa-della-repubblica-italiana-2023/ Wed, 31 May 2023 04:09:08 +0000 /?p=3112

Italian Word of the Day: Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day)

Ìý

Every year on June 2nd, Italians celebrateÌýla Festa della RepubblicaÌý– known asÌýRepublic DayÌýin English – which is the name of the Italian national day. It celebrates the institutional referendum held just a year after the end of the Second World War, in which the Italian people voted to abolish the monarchy and form a republic.

Although celebrations are held all over Italy, the main event always takes place in Rome. It includes a flag-raising ceremony, the deposition of a laurel wreath by theÌýPresident of the RepublicÌý(Presidente della Repubblica) at theÌýAltar of the FatherlandÌý(Altare della Patria) in honour of the Unknown Soldier (Milite Ignoto) and a grand military parade alongÌýVia dei Fori Imperiali.

During the ceremony, the Italian National anthem is sung and theÌýFrecce Tricolori, the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force, cross the skies of Rome, emitting a design with red, green and white smoke that resembles the Italian flag.

Because it is a public holiday, many businesses and institutions remain closed including banks, shops, schools, offices and museums. Festivals, concerts and parades are held across the nation, as well as impressive firework displays in the evening.

Fuochi d’artificio per la Festa della Repubblica a Torino = Fireworks on Republic Day in Turin

Lyrics to theÌýÌý(with English translation)

Fratelli d’Italia,
l’Italia s’è desta,
dell’elmo di Scipio
s’è cinta la testa.
Dov’è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
ché schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l’Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l’Italia chiamò! Sì!

Brothers of Italy,
Italy has awoken,
with Scipio’s helmet
Upon her head.
Where is Victory?
Let her bow down,
For God has made her
A slave of Rome.

Let us join in a cohort,
we are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called.
Let us join in a cohort,
We are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called! Yes!

BIA CHRISTMAS LUNCH

4th December 2022

The 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳ held their annual Christmas Lunch event on Sunday 4th December, at St Patricks Cathedral Hall, located at 3 Lyons Street South, Ballarat Central.

The event was well attended, with over 100 people enjoying an authentic Italian cultural experience, which was a great way to begin the festive spirit. This was highlighted by the enchanting music of local talent, . All the children (and adults) were excited to have a special visit from Santa, taking time out of his busy schedule to deliver gifts to the children and pose for many photos with the children and those young at heart. We also celebrated a couple of birthdays on the day, with everyone joining in on a “Tanti Auguri a te” to mark the occasions.

Thank you to all that attended for making this event such a success.

As you can see from the pictures below, it was a day of family friendly fun with a very relaxed atmosphere. The day was complete with some great food, drinks and entertainment. The weather even graced us with some sunshine! What more could you ask for?

BIA AGM Review & Committee for 2022-2023

The 520·òÆÞÂÛ̳ (BIA) held our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at BGT’s Barkly Square Lecture Theatre on the 7th November 2022. The AGM was well attended by members, who were presented with usual but detailed reports from the President, Frank Cotronea and Treasurer, Michael Bigarelli. In summary of these reports, the BIA continues to be in a strong position to meet the needs of its membership as well as the Ballarat community.

RITA RIPANI – Life Membership Award

As part of the Presidents report, Frank Cotronea presented Rita Ripani with a Life Membership to the BIA. Rita has been a major contributor to the BIA over the years and is deserving of such an award. Here are some pictures of Rita receiving her award, and as always with a friendly smile. Well done, Rita.

Rita had also decided to step away from her role as a Committee Member and was not seeking re-election. Frank also thanked Rita on behalf of the BIA for her efforts during the previous year on committee.

The final official proceeding of the AGM was the election of the Committee of Management for the 2022-2023 period.

All position were declared vacant and the outgoing President handed over proceedings to the returning officer. Thank you to a familiar face, in Cesare (Chez) Dichiera, for facilitating this role.

The executive positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer & Secretary received single nominations for each role. While the 6 available positions of Ordinary Committee Member had received 8 nominations. This meant that a ballot was conducted and attending members had to cast their vote to decide the outcome.

Following the ballot, the nominations that did not obtain a position were David Berry and Malcolm Freeman. Thank you to everyone for their nominations. As a reminder to you all, the BIA occasionally require the use of sub committees. As a member of the BIA, you can be part of a sub-committee as required.

The BIA would like to thank David Berry for his efforts whilst on the committee over the past couple of periods and note that without contributions of volunteers like this, the BIA couldn’t exist.

We would now like to introduce you to the elected BIA Committee of Management as follows:
